Commissioners approve slate of EDC grant projects including downtown Denton sign and parking-lot paving

The mayor and commissioners voted to approve a package of projects to seek Economic Development Commission funding after staff presented a proposed list intended to use a $50,000 grant.
"These are the ones that were mentioned at the last meeting… whatever we agree on tonight, we'll go ahead and start the scoping letters to get that sent in for approval with the state," Miss Jenkins (town staff, S8) told the board while reviewing the proposal.
The project list presented for EDC consideration included paving the town-owned portion of a parking lot, creating an outdoor market area the town controls, replacing damaged holiday displays on telephone poles, adding town banners for downtown, repairing mulch at Harrison Park playground and installing or updating a downtown "Denton, North Carolina" sign.
Staff also reviewed display and sponsorship options for banners and hardware. One staff member (S7) provided price estimates — for example, earlier quotes showed about $128 per banner for an order of 10 — and the board discussed a sponsorship term. The mayor recommended shortening a proposed five‑year sponsorship to three years to align with warranty coverage, and the board accepted that change.
Commissioner S6 moved to approve the full list of projects for submission under the EDC grant; S7 seconded and the motion carried. Miss Jenkins said staff will prepare scoping letters and proceed with state application steps. She added that if a particular project is not funded, remaining funds could be reallocated to other projects on the list.
The board also heard associated operational updates, including that Duke Energy would assess pole availability for banners and that a small replacement fund from sponsor fees would be set aside to cover vandalism or theft of banners.
