The Old Kings Highway Committee tabled a prominent solar application for 2 Cottonwood Street on July 13 after lengthy discussion about the proposal’s visual impact and engineering constraints.
Craig Warren, structure manager for Momentum Solar (speaker 13), said the proposed 34-panel array maximized production with most panels on the front roof and that moving more panels to the rear would reduce efficiency because of trees and roof geometry. Committee members pressed him on visibility from Cottonwood Street and asked whether panels interrupted by a chimney and vent could be rearranged to create a more symmetrical appearance.
Warren offered to re-engineer the layout — for example moving three panels to the back of the garage — but said such changes would reduce production and require rewriting the client contract. Committee members said they wanted the agent to work with the client and the home office to reduce the number of front-facing panels and avoid large, asymmetric arrays on a corner lot; several members noted Cottonwood Street’s architectural homogeneity and prominence in the historic district.
The committee voted to table the application to allow the applicant to reconfigure the array and return with alternatives. The applicant was told to provide detailed reconfiguration options, including any engineering implications and a visual sample of proposed placements, before the committee will reconsider the application.
