The Christiansburg Town Council unanimously certified a recent closed meeting and set a series of public hearings for May 26, 2026, to consider acquiring easements for the College Street drainage improvements project.
A committee member moved to certify that the council had met in closed session and discussed only matters lawfully exempted from open meeting requirements by Virginia law, as identified in the resolution; the motion was seconded and the clerk recorded a unanimous roll-call vote of 6-0 (Mister Bishop; Missus Bowman; Missus Hicks; Missus Hockett; Missus Unburger; Missus Waltz). The motion stated the council had discussed only matters permitted under Virginia Code § 15.2-2204.
The council then voted to set a public hearing for May 26, 2026, to consider "the acquisition by condemnation or otherwise of easements for the College Street drainage improvements project" over parts of 882 College Street (tax map 526-A-110; parcel ID 013525) and 890 College Street (tax map 526-A-105; parcel ID 013530). After the motion was seconded, a resident urged parties to negotiate and "please please please help the town come to an agreement to allow us to continue this College Street project," and the council approved the hearing by a 6-0 vote.
The council approved a second motion setting the same May 26 hearing to consider acquisition of easements over part of 920 College Street (tax map 526-A-107; parcel ID 000323). That motion was seconded and passed 6-0.
Each hearing will be advertised as required under Virginia Code § 15.2-2204, the council said. The actions recorded in the meeting minutes were procedural steps to allow formal public input and, if necessary, legal acquisition of easements the town says it needs for the drainage work.
Before adjourning, the chair reminded members of an upcoming work session (date referenced in the meeting as May 20) and there was brief, unresolved back-and-forth about the start time (statements of 06:00, 06:15 and 06:30 were made); the clerk will confirm the correct time. The council adjourned following that exchange.
