Senator Ryan Weld spoke after the vote, describing the LEEDA (Local Economic Development Assistance) program as a source of small community grants that can fund a variety of projects. He thanked the commission for facilitating the payment and presented a symbolic envelope and check. "These types of funds are used for projects from for all kinds of projects... ambulances, canine officer here in Hancock County, the VFW previously in Wheaton," the senator said, noting he had come before the commission with similar grants in the past.
George Abbotochny, who identified himself as Post 10 commander in Wheaton, accepted the funds on behalf of members and outlined planned uses: electrical repairs to an aging building, a new flat-top oven to support meal service, and a new computer system to manage the post’s bar and supplies. "The funds we're gonna use this for are to, fix a lot of the electrical problems we have in our building," Abbotochny said.
The commission approved accepting the funds by voice vote and invited the senator and recipients to speak immediately following the approval.
