The Elk County Salary Board approved a policy establishing a three-hour minimum call/pay for the county’s full-time prison nurse.
Rodney Connesport, deputy warden, told the board that in a recent incident a nurse responded around 2 a.m., stabilized the situation in roughly 10 minutes and stayed to complete documentation, a span during which the nurse remained on site for about 45 minutes. "That 40 minutes, saved us an an ambulance run," Connesport said, arguing that compensating for a three-hour minimum would be fair and fiscally prudent compared with the cost of emergency response and overtime elsewhere.
Connesport said similar provisions exist for other corrections staff and that the proposed policy would align nursing pay with those practices. County administration supported the proposal, saying the policy was ultimately a fiscal win when compared with the expense of emergency responses.
After discussion, the board approved the three-hour minimum call/pay policy by voice vote. Chair Fritz Lucker announced the motion carried.
