Lake Stevens parks staff outline new reservation systems, maintenance shifts and capital work

Reservation changes include a new system for reserving shelters (Oak Hill Park and Frontier Heights shelters are now reservable) and the ability to reserve basketball courts for events; staff said pickleball courts have four courts but only two are reservable so at least two remain first‑come, first‑served (except for large special events). Staff also reported removal of temporary skate park elements at North Cove and a planned basketball hoop installation; playground safety work included replacing worn rubber mats under swing bays.
Staff provided an events calendar (farmers market weekly through August, Music in the Parks starting June 21, Movies in the Park on August 7 and 21, and Pops with Cops events at North Cove and Lundin Park) and noted some third‑party camps were canceled for low registration; staff said these are contracted providers and fees vary by program.
On capital projects, Cedarwood Recreation Area is at 30% design with future open houses planned; Frontier Heights construction has resumed and its sensory garden border is complete; Davies Pier resurfacing is expected to begin in August, with bids currently open. Staff also said that after an insurance and legal review the city will assume baseline maintenance (mowing, trash pickup) of several parks previously overseen by HOAs and that any future improvements must go through the budget process.
Board members asked about specific site issues (trip hazards from roots, graffiti on adjacent fences, and seating/ADA access at Timberlake); staff described constraints (some parks are stormwater detention areas that limit grade changes) and proposed paint/paving projects and root mitigation where feasible.
Staff also noted improved lake surface-water testing posted online, described a recent swimmer's‑itch report and urged the public not to feed ducks to help protect water quality.
