Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities briefs Montrose council on services, dues and legislative priorities

Bradley Peterson, an attorney and lobbyist who represents the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities (CGMC), gave a briefing to the Montrose City Council about his organization’s work and the benefits of membership.
Peterson said CGMC represents about 110 Greater Minnesota cities outside the seven-county metro area and provides legislative advocacy, policy analysis, communications support, and periodic legal or regulatory engagement. He highlighted recent CGMC work on bonding, Public Facilities Authority (PFA) programs, LGA protection, lead-line replacement programs and transportation funding for small-city streets. Peterson said CGMC can model impacts on Local Government Aid (LGA) for specific proposals and routinely offers regional meetings, conferences and an annual legislative day in Saint Paul.
Peterson outlined a phased dues schedule for new members (phased over four years with a per-capita component); staff noted the first-year, phased dues estimate would be modest compared with later years and that total ongoing dues would depend on population and periodic membership adjustments. Council members said they see value in a focused Greater Minnesota voice at the Capitol and asked staff to consider the membership during the 2027 budget process.
What’s next: Peterson offered to send a sample resolution and additional materials; councilors asked staff to evaluate the membership cost and potential budget line adjustments for the next fiscal year.
