Bonner County commissioners used their July 14 meeting to outline district updates and to press for stronger internal controls after public questions about an electioneering issue and recent administrative errors.
District 2 commissioner (speaker 6) said the county has received numerous public comments about Priest Lake recreation designations and provided an update on a local bike-park matter. The commissioner also pressed for internal auditing and root-cause process improvements. "When I'm giving a comment about our finances, it's when you have an error, the error isn't the issue. It's we need to fix how did we have it and create a process," the commissioner said, adding that the county accepted the Government Finance Officers Association 'Green Book' recommendations and must follow internal controls.
Electioneering and AG involvement: Commissioners and members of the public discussed an electioneering complaint and whether enforcement rests with the prosecutor when the county ran an election for a private club. The district commissioner said the secretary of state's office deferred to the attorney general on some county-level questions and that the prosecutor may be the official responsible for enforcement. Diane Willie, a Bonner County resident, asked whether the electioneering remediation recommendations had been addressed.
Public comment and community items: During public comment Amy Lunsford urged residents to attend a Lake Pend Oreille School District meeting about proposed classroom moves; Jim Liddy asked whether an executive session was planned (the board said no). Several speakers encouraged commissioners to consult auditing staff directly to clarify technical questions before speaking publicly.
Next steps: The commissioner said he is requesting legal opinion from the attorney general on internal auditing enforcement and will update the public when that input arrives. The meeting adjourned at 10:03 a.m.
