County attorney Mark announced during the meeting that he will step down from the lead county attorney role effective next week and recommended that Clayton be appointed to take the lead. Mark said he will remain available in a supportive role and will provide a resignation letter to enable a formal appointment.
"I'll get you a letter just saying I'm stepping down effective next Tuesday, and you can ... make an appointment for him," Mark said. He described the transition as "not retirement" but a change to "get in the backseat" while Clayton assumes lead duties.
Mark reviewed his tenure and contribution in the office, noting he began as county attorney in January 1997 and cited decades of service and experience working with commissioners, council members and department heads. Commissioners praised his long service and said they will act on a formal appointment next week.
What’s next: Mark will submit a written notice and commissioners expect to put an appointment form before the board at the next meeting to formally appoint Clayton as county attorney.
