Commission approves first reading to extend firefighters' DROP from 60 to 96 months

The Casselberry City Commission on Jan. 26 approved on first reading Ordinance 26-1630 to extend the Deferred Retirement Option Program participation period for firefighters from the current 60 months to 96 months.
Assistant City Manager Laurie Martin Black told the commission that the pension board unanimously recommended the draft ordinance and that an accompanying actuarial impact statement "states there is no cost associated with this amendment." The city manager recommended the ordinance for approval on first reading.
The change would allow firefighters more time in the DROP program, which lets eligible employees retire and receive deferred pension benefits while remaining employed. Laurie Martin Black said the amendment is limited to the firefighters' plan; she also said the police officers currently do not have a DROP program and staff is working with the pension board on that separately.
No members of the public spoke on the matter. Commissioner DeVita moved to approve the ordinance on first reading; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote, recorded as 4–0.
The ordinance will return for a subsequent reading to finalize adoption. The commission did not discuss any implementation timetable or changes to contribution rates during the meeting.
