Chincoteague council approves budget amendments to correct duplicate entries, adjusts harbor totals

The Chincoteague Town Council voted to approve budget amendments during its Dec. 1 meeting to correct accounting issues and adjust harbor fund totals. Mister Taverick, who reviewed the changes for the council, said many items represented additional revenue and expenditures that had been counted twice in the budget and needed to be corrected.
"Most of these items you see are additional revenue in the budget over and above what was budgeted for, FY '25 and '26," Mister Taverick said, and he explained the harbor totals were affected because the VPA grant the town had anticipated was not received.
A council member asked whether the amendments were being used to complete outstanding audits. Mister Taverick said the amendments were unrelated to closing delinquent audits and that the town is awaiting a first draft of the 2023 audit; work on the 2024 and 2025 audits will follow once that draft arrives.
The motion to approve the amendments was made by Mister Savage and seconded by Mister Taylor; the council adopted the amendments by voice vote (all answered "Aye"). The amendments were described in the meeting as accounting adjustments and not new ongoing spending commitments.
