North Royalton seeks multi-city grant to repair rapidly deteriorating Sprague Road

Streets Superintendent Kevin Nekl and City Engineer Matt Glass told the committee April 7 that Sprague Road needs substantial work between State and Broadview roads after accelerated deterioration.
Glass said the pavement has deteriorated faster than expected given its age; Nekl explained the existing pavement is a white-topped structure with approximately 6 inches of asphalt beneath about 6 inches of concrete. Nekl said the cost-effective repair that multiple cities are considering is to grind down the top and lay asphalt, pending a Broadview Heights-led core-sample report to determine the failure cause. Broadview Heights plans to approach Cuyahoga County for emergency or grant funding; Nekl said none of the cities have funds budgeted to replace Sprague Road in 2026.
Committee members asked about warranty and lifespan; Nekl said there is no warranty and Glass said the road remains within expected life-expectancy but has deteriorated more rapidly this season. The committee voted to add Sprague Road as an item on the May Streets Committee agenda to continue coordination with Broadview Heights and county officials.
Next steps: Broadview Heights to complete a core-sample report; county funding options to be explored and discussed at the May Streets Committee meeting.
