The Nederland City Council on July 13 voted to authorize staff to submit an application to the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) seeking $6.5 million for water supply and infrastructure projects.
Finance director Miss Tucker said the resolution amends the city’s purchasing policy to ensure compliance with TWDB procurement requirements and is required to accompany the funding application. City manager De La Rosa and staff explained the application would target roughly $6.5 million in shovel‑ready water and sewer projects, including looping portions of the water system that currently terminate in dead ends.
Staff said looping the distribution system is intended to address long‑standing concerns with trihalomethane formation in dead‑end areas—compounds that, after decades of exposure, have been tied to increased cancer risk. City staff noted the application will compete among many regional water suppliers and that smaller requests can be competitive when projects are shovel‑ready.
Council voted unanimously to approve both the procurement‑policy resolution (2026‑11) and the TWDB application authorization (2026‑12); staff said the application deadline is at the end of the month and will proceed immediately.
