The Nederland City Council unanimously approved a two‑year collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with IAFF Local 3339 on July 13.
Stephanie Casper, civil service director, summarized the tentative agreement reached after six negotiation sessions. Major items include changes to the hiring process for entry‑level firefighter positions (removing a requirement that at least two applicants take a competitive test), clarified holiday‑pay language for regularly scheduled firefighters, an increase in funeral leave from 36 to 48 consecutive work hours with an affidavit requirement, revised certification pay tiers and additional certification categories, and updated temporary assignment pay for employees performing captain duties.
The agreement also implements a 3% annual cost‑of‑living adjustment over the two‑year term and a one‑time 4% pay adjustment for the assistant/buyer chief position; future appointments to that rank will be salaried and exempt from overtime. The CBA kept the existing physical‑fitness incentive assessment standard unchanged.
After a motion and second, council members voted to approve the agreement by roll call. No representative of IAFF Local 3339 addressed the council at the meeting.
The CBA will be effective Oct. 1, 2026 through Sept. 30, 2028, as recorded in the adopted motion.
