Council hears concerns as dog park fund nears depletion; asks for more information

The North Branford Town Council on July 14 discussed the future of the town’s volunteer-supported Dog Park after staff reported the managing group’s account had less than $1,000 remaining.

Rory (town staff) said the dog park was established on town property and originally intended to be maintained by the nonprofit volunteer group North Branford Unleashed; he told the council he had reviewed minutes and talked with a current member (Marilyn Majeluski) and found one remaining group member and limited funds. Rory said while no immediate repairs were required, the account balance is low and the group may need to be reconstituted or the town may need to consider other maintenance arrangements if it wishes to keep the park active.

Councilors and residents raised three main concerns: (1) liability if a dog injures a person or another dog, (2) actual usage levels at the park, and (3) who would maintain the fence and grounds if volunteer funds are exhausted. Residents who use the park said the site is used multiple times a week and that the fence and grass are in good condition; one resident said public-works staff have been mowing and could continue to do so.

Council guidance and next steps - Staff will gather specific cost and usage numbers and return with proposals in August so the council can decide whether the town assumes maintenance, supports a reconstituted volunteer group, or takes other action. - No motion was made to change ownership or immediately alter maintenance; the matter was left under unfinished business to collect more information.
