Board approves two CalPERS industrial disability retirements for city public-safety workers

The Pasadena Fire & Police Retirement System board approved CalPERS industrial disability retirements for two public-safety employees during its July 6 meeting. The board found police officer Vito Gaxiola substantially incapacitated with a retirement date of Sept. 19, 2025, and approved a similar determination for firefighter-paramedic Ross Wilson with a retirement date of Sept. 26, 2022. In both cases the board instructed counsel and staff to prepare the necessary documentation and forward the decisions to CalPERS.
Both motions were moved and seconded and carried on voice vote. Chair Jones thanked each retiree for their service during the proceedings. Gaxiola briefly addressed the board, saying, "Being a police officer is one of the coolest jobs ever," and thanked the trustees. Wilson also addressed trustees and expressed appreciation for his time with the department, calling Pasadena one of the best experiences of his career.
The board closed portions of the docket for the hearings to discuss medical reports submitted in support of the CalPERS filings, consistent with the applicants' request to limit public access to medical details. The actions will be forwarded to CalPERS for final administrative processing under the public employee's retirement law.
