Rio Rancho board approves $20,000 in Sandoval County DWI prevention grants for Independence High, and awards multiple vendor contracts

The Rio Rancho Public Schools Board of Education approved two Sandoval County–funded DWI prevention initiatives for Independence High School and awarded several procurement contracts during its July 13 meeting.
Associate Superintendent Miss Sanchez described two related initiatives funded by Sandoval County: (1) a student-led media campaign run through film and media literacy classes that will produce four public-service announcements, billboards or posters aimed at preventing underage drinking and impaired driving; and (2) a targeted, evidence-based Health Rocks prevention curriculum for approximately 45 leadership students that includes at least 16 sessions and pre/post assessments. Miss Sanchez said the combined grant investment is $20,000 and requires regular data reporting and coordination with Sandoval County’s DWI prevention team. “These initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach that combines prevention with authentic student-centered learning experiences,” Miss Sanchez said.
The board moved and seconded approval of both professional-services contracts tied to the Sandoval County DWI prevention and intervention program and carried each motion on voice votes.
In procurement matters, Chris Sweet explained the district’s use of supplemental awards for on-demand painting contractors after an initial RFP attracted only a single response. The evaluation committee recommended awarding work to four vendors — including Veil Contracting Services Inc. and several supplemental contractors — to ensure capacity for painting projects across district facilities. Sweet also recommended awarding refuse-and-recycling services to the incumbent vendor, which the evaluation committee found responsive; the board approved the awards.
All routine agenda, consent agenda and procurement motions were approved on voice votes during the meeting. The board set upcoming committee and regular meeting dates, then adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
