Student representative urges board to study weighted GPA for AP students; referral made to Instructional Committee

Erin said that the current use of unweighted GPAs can disadvantage students who take many AP courses when class deciles are compared by college admissions officers. She described cases of peers who took rigorous coursework but received fewer merit scholarships because their raw GPAs did not reflect course difficulty.
“I believe there’s some sort of benefit to students having weighted GPAs here, especially those who take a plethora of AP classes,” Erin said, asking the board to “please take this into consideration.”
Chair thanked Erin for her service and referred the suggestion to the Instructional Committee for study. Board members noted that this was the first time the topic had been raised in a public meeting and agreed to dig into the issue at the committee level and report back.
No vote was taken; the referral creates a formal path for examing policy options and potential impacts on class rank and scholarship calculations.
