Deputy describes lifesaving efforts, evidence and limits of initial search at Windsor Drive shooting

Deputy Debbie Reyes Perez testified on direct that she was dispatched on Feb. 16, 2023, to a reported shooting at 7718 Windsor Drive in San Antonio and was among the first law-enforcement officers to arrive. She said she found the male victim face down, turned him over, retrieved a first-aid kit, applied chest seals and instructed her partner to start chest compressions; emergency medical services later took custody of the victim for transport.
Perez told jurors she arrived in uniform with a partner identified as Deputy Maxwell and that the property was a duplex. She testified she located a DVR inside the residence that showed about three camera views; one camera she said was angled toward the pool-table area but was not displaying that view on the DVR screen. Perez said she observed approximately four shell casings at or near the driveway and doorway area.
In cross-examination, defense counsel probed Perez about response protocols and the scope of her search. Perez acknowledged she did not conduct a complete perimeter search of the rear yard, that searching for additional blood trails was not her primary focus, and that use of specialized tools or magnet sweeps to recover shell casings is the responsibility of the crime-scene unit. She said she identified people on scene (the homeowner and two women) as potential witnesses and provided that information to detectives, but did not personally follow up on leads beyond her initial report.
The state played Perez's body-worn camera footage and tendered it as State's exhibit 75, which the court admitted without objection. Perez testified she had reviewed and initialed the footage. The prosecution also confirmed the presence of crime-scene and CID personnel at the scene; Perez identified the crime-scene investigator reflected in the video.
The session ended with the witness excused subject to recall. The trial then moved to additional testimony about home surveillance video and household occupants. The court recessed for lunch and expected to reconvene at 1:30 p.m.
