Resident urges Laurel to replace fireworks with drone shows, citing children, animals and veterans’ needs

Laurel — During the public hearing, resident Ruth Walls urged the council to consider alternatives to fireworks for city events, arguing that loud explosions harm children’s sensitive ears, frighten wildlife and can trigger veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

“Loud bangs can hurt sensitive growing ears,” Walls said, describing how fireworks disturb animals and sometimes separate offspring from parents. She also noted that toxic metals from fireworks produce litter and that drone shows are already used by other communities as a less harmful public-safety option.

Walls identified herself for the record (414 Prince George Street) and said she had submitted a letter to council members. She said the city could afford to explore alternatives such as drone shows even if they cost more. The mayor and council did not take formal action on the suggestion at the meeting.
