Resident urges Poplar Bluff to be 'intentional' about recruiting Black police and fire applicants

During the public comment period at the Nov. 4 Poplar Bluff City Council meeting, resident Spencer Jones (903905 South Garfield) urged the city to take an "intentional" approach to recruiting African American applicants for police and fire positions.
Jones said he had spoken with someone at the fire department who told him there was "somebody in the training thing at the college," and he indicated he will press the city on recruitment in 2025. "When people in authority show intentionality, things are done," Jones said.
Council members did not announce formal action in response to his remarks during the Nov. 4 meeting; Jones used the public comment time to raise concerns and to signal ongoing advocacy on recruitment and diversity in public safety hiring.
