Sheriff requests nearly $90,000 to cover emergency inmate medical bill; council advertises appropriation

The sheriff said the county is responsible for inmate care while in custody and that negotiations with billing contractors (QCC) have reduced charges in other cases.
"That is the bill we received," the sheriff said, describing the hospital charges and noting some dates may be billed to the Department of Corrections; the sheriff estimated up to $10,000 could be shifted to DOC once billing dates are reconciled.
Council discussed fund sources. Committee member (S4) moved to advertise the request from fund 11.70 (a line referenced in the packet) up to the maximum amount requested while the county reviews which portions, if any, DOC will cover. The motion was seconded and carried.
Officials asked the sheriff’s office to continue negotiations with the billing administrator to reduce charges where possible and to report back with final numbers; auditors will post the advertised appropriation for public comment before final action.
