Commissioners press for repairs and follow up on code-enforcement cases

Smiths Grove commissioners discussed an unannounced street cut on Vincent Street expected to be repaired by the subcontractor, ongoing trash and sign damage cleanup, cemetery chapel leaks, and continued a 5th Street code-enforcement case to June while County enforcement pursues fence removal on Sunset Avenue.
Several operational and code-enforcement issues were discussed at the March 24 Smiths Grove City Commission meeting, with commissioners directing follow-up and noting short-term repair plans.
Commissioner Bob Buehl reported an unannounced street cut on Vincent Street across from Atek that was left unrepaired; Atek told the commission the subcontractor will repair the street with concrete by the end of the month. Buehl said gravel will be ordered for alleys and thanked Debbie Richey for raking temporary gravel, which has been a driving nuisance.
Chief Jason Franks reported trash blowing around Main Street and the I-65 on/off ramps and said heavy winds damaged the Smiths Grove sign near the old Bryce Inn property. Franks said a town cleanup date will be set in April and reminded commissioners of a marathon in May; Clerk Alice Elkins prepared an informational sheet for participants.
Commissioner Patrick Young said the cemetery chapel has ongoing leaks on the west-facing wall; he has contacted three roofing companies and will meet with one contractor on Monday. Commissioner Jennifer Cartwright reminded residents to maintain grass height under ten inches and provided several property updates: the board continued action on a 5th Street property to the June meeting after owners were ill and County Code Enforcement has contacted the Sunset Avenue property owner, giving 30 days to move a fence out of the right-of-way before the city may issue notice of violation and citation. Cartwright also reported that the property at 321 Cave Street had been purchased, the house demolished, and the lot was being cleaned.
The commission agreed to follow up on contractor repair timelines, set a cleanup date in April, and monitor the County Code Enforcement actions noted by Attorney Hamp Moore.
