Board and mayor debate renaming, sponsorships for Keizer turf fields complex

A proposal to give the turf fields a simpler, sponsorship-friendly name prompted a long discussion at the Keizer Parks and Recreation Advisory Board's July 14 meeting about honoring local history and avoiding confusion for visitors.
Councilor Parsons and others suggested a facility name such as "Keizer Sports Complex West" with individual fields bearing sponsor names. Councilor Parsons said a generic name could make it easier to attract sponsors and visitors. "If somebody came forward and wanted to give us a 100 k or whatever and sponsor that field, then their name would go above it," a council representative said during the discussion.
Mayor Kathy Clark, speaking to the board, clarified the distinction between the nonprofit and the facility: for the record, she said, "my name is Kathy Clark. I'm mayor. The name Kaiser Community Fields is the name of the nonprofit organization. It is not the name of the facility." (The city and board use the spelling Keizer for the city name; the nonprofit is commonly referenced as Keizer Community Fields.) The mayor and staff described a model in which the facility keeps a simple identifying name (for example, "Sports Complex at Keizer Rapids Park") while individual fields or elements can carry sponsor or memorial names, subject to council review and agreement.
Board members raised concerns about removing or diminishing Little League's legacy at the site. One board member noted that on-site memorials and the concession stand already acknowledge Little League organizers, and several members suggested retaining commemorative recognition even if the facility name changes.
The discussion covered practical matters: the need to avoid confusing directional names (east/west) for nonlocal visitors; how sponsorship naming would be handled through council agreements; and the importance of a simple facility name that would work with GPS and event scheduling. The mayor said sponsorship agreements and any naming rights would still come before the city council for approval.
No formal vote was taken; the board asked staff to bring the topic to council agenda input for further discussion and to consider how signage, maps and sponsorship agreements would be handled.
