Smiths Grove police deputy departs; officials preview Pace Marathon route changes

Deputy Chief Hany Elhubishi announced he has accepted another position and will be leaving the Smiths Grove Police Department, the commission heard at its Oct. 28 meeting. Chief Jason Franks presented Elhubishi with a plaque and thanked him for his service to the city.
Chief Franks said the department has been wrapping up theft cases and noted he would begin the process of hiring another officer. Franks also cautioned that the department cannot fully replace the experience and institutional knowledge Elhubishi provided.
Franks told the commission that Warren County Parks held initial planning for the Pace Marathon scheduled for May 2025; organizers have prepared a preliminary, revised route and expect a more involved block party that officials hope will become an annual event. Franks said the event planning may bring improvements to Ed Spear Park.
Commissioner Eric Schroader used the report to urge vigilance after a recent uptick in thefts in Bowling Green and surrounding areas and reminded residents that early voting begins Oct. 31 with Election Day on Nov. 5.
The commission did not take formal action on staffing or the marathon at the meeting; Chief Franks said recruitment for a replacement is underway.
