Smiths Grove approves full-time hire for city clerk, raises pay to $17 an hour

The Smiths Grove City Commission voted 5-0 on Oct. 28 to approve making Alice Elkins the city’s full-time clerk, setting her schedule at 36 hours per week and increasing her pay to $17 an hour.
Mayor David L. Stiffey moved to shorten Elkins’ probationary period and make her full time effective Oct. 28, 2024, and Commissioner Maurice “Buddy” Marr seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. The minutes record that Debbie Joyner and Nancy Howard will continue to work intermittently to assist with certain activities and audit tasks.
Stiffey told commissioners the clerk will observe the same holiday schedule as other city employees. The motion also included language in the minutes that retirement will begin on Nov. 1, 2024; the commission’s recorded action did not provide additional detail about that retirement entry.
The decision came during routine administrative business; the commission did not debate the merits at length. The hire formalizes Elkins’ transition from a part-time probationary role into a full-time position and adjusts payroll accordingly.
The commission approved the Treasurer’s Report earlier in the meeting by a separate 5-0 vote. There were no further personnel motions at the meeting. The commission adjourned at 8:10 p.m.
