Brighton City Council approved an ordinance adding Article 8-26 to the Brighton Municipal Code to prohibit unauthorized RV and tent camping on private property.
Support Services Commander Mike Domenighini told council private RV and tent encampments drive resource-intensive response and clean-up efforts and often depend on trespass complaints and property-owner cooperation. The proposed amendment would make it unlawful to camp on private property except where camping is expressly authorized by the city. Commander Domenighini noted an explicit non-violation: camping on a residential property with the property owner's written permission for not more than seven consecutive days or for fewer than 15 days in a calendar year is permitted.
Councilmember Tom Green moved to approve the ordinance; Councilmember Chris Fiedler seconded. The motion passed 7'0to'00 with Mayor Mills and Councilmember Jim Snyder absent.
The change aims to give staff and property owners clearer enforcement authority against unauthorized private-property encampments while preserving a short, owner-permitted exception for residential property.
