Learning Commons renovation earns positive reviews from students and teachers

District staff presented an evaluation of the recently completed Learning Commons renovation and reported high user satisfaction and specific recommendations for follow-up investments.

Presenters said the evaluation combined focus groups with the student council, teacher feedback and a district survey. "Students consistently described the space as more welcoming, comfortable, and collaborative," a presenter said, and nearly 80% of survey respondents rated the renovation "good" or "excellent." Staff feedback aligned with student impressions but identified practical needs: easier access to BenQ interactive boards, more flexible seating and reservation options so two classes can use the area concurrently, improved sound management and consideration of a makerspace or podcasting area.

Project leads said they ordered additional seating and bookcases in response to high use, installed BenQ boards and plan more staff training so teachers can exploit the technology for presentations and collaboration. They framed future enhancements as incremental improvements that build on the original design rather than replacements, and said recommendations will be prioritized as funding allows.

The team also reported modest survey response counts but consistent feedback across respondent groups, and they cited the year's valedictorian recognition of the Learning Commons during graduation as an informal endorsement of the space's impact.

Next steps named by presenters include refining reservation and access protocols, scheduling additional BenQ training for staff, exploring technology additions such as charging stations and a makerspace if funding becomes available, and monitoring instructional use through ongoing classroom walkthroughs and teacher feedback.
