Students praised for Cougar Cafe life-skills program at Nottoway board meeting

The board recognized Attaway High School’s Cougar Cafe, a student-run life-skills program that opened Oct. 21, 2024. Mr. Wilson (speaker 7) described how students run the cafe to practice math, communication and workplace skills, and said they have fulfilled more than 900 orders and participated in community events.
Mr. Wilson described student activities — creating recipes, shopping with classmates, visiting the post office and community partners such as Citizens Bank and Trust, Mitchell’s Restaurant, the Blackstone Fire Department and Heritage Hall — and said proceeds have funded activities such as a Thanksgiving meal for families. The presentation included pictures and a short video clip.
Student Philip (speaker 1), one of the students who helps run the cafe, spoke briefly: “my name is Philip… I really like dealing with the coffee,” and invited board members to visit when the cafe is operating.
Board members praised the program and suggested ways to expand visibility and access (including cash sales when the cafe is present). The board thanked students, teachers and staff involved in the program.
Next steps: staff will coordinate follow-up as requested by the board, including an opportunity for board members to purchase coffee when the cafe is operating on campus.
