At the Jan. 12 meeting the board received first readings of revised board policies that update background-check and fingerprinting language to reflect recent statutory changes and district practice.
"At first, we thought this was gonna be a piece of cake and then, not so much," Superintendent Hoyer said as she walked trustees through wording updates in Policy 2600 and related policy documents. She noted changes that standardize job titles (for example, changing 'work experience/internship coordinator' to 'career pathway advisor') and corrections to wording the administration identified.
Hoyer said the district incorporated language informed by the Montana School Boards Association's recommended wording and cited a recent law (House Bill 475) that affected how background checks and fingerprinting must be handled. She also said Human Resources staff added a DOJ audit recommendation requiring fingerprint forms to be placed in a separate locked file.
Executive director Jackie Mainwaring and HR director Heather Spurz were acknowledged for their work updating the policies. Trustees were asked to review the materials before potential ratification at a future meeting; no vote occurred during the Jan. 12 session.
The board will consider final adoption at a later meeting after trustees have had time to review the proposed wording and statutory citations.
