Board discusses possible Burtville Elementary closure and registrar relocation; motion withdrawn pending feasibility study

The board spent an extended portion of its meeting discussing facilities planning for Burtville Elementary and a possible relocation of the county registrar’s office. Chair (speaker 1) asked the board to target June 30 as a tentative closing date for Burtville Elementary to align with county timelines; the chair said that date would help clarify whether renovation or closure would be pursued.

Several board members opposed setting a firm date before reviewing the consultant’s feasibility study. One member said, "I prefer to wait until we get the results of the feasibility study before we do any kind of vote on something like that," and another warned that moving too quickly could disrupt community services. Concerns focused on the Feed More pantry currently operating out of the school and the risk that a premature decision could leave families without food access.

An electoral‑board representative in the audience confirmed the procedural steps: a letter to the attorney general is followed by a staff review and then a state process that includes the State Board of Elections. Board members emphasized the school board’s role is building control, not the registrar’s placement decision, but said the board needs the feasibility report to inform any action.

The chair moved to target June 30, a second was offered for discussion and then the chair withdrew the motion after members asked for more information; the board agreed to table formal action until after the feasibility draft is available (staff expects a draft by the end of April).
