Pamlico County Schools highlights summer programs and reports new 6–12 school is under budget

Superintendent Dr. Johnson opened the meeting by recognizing local volunteers and partners who supported summer programs and new teachers, and by previewing the district’s back-to-school calendar. "We had a number of CTE camps…All Things Flight is a partnership between Pamlico County Schools and FRC East," Dr. Johnson said, summarizing the variety of summer offerings.
Dr. Johnson publicly thanked the Pamlico County Schools retired personnel group and named Wanda Dawson as president of that group for assisting with school supplies and mentoring beginning teachers. Dr. Johnson also recognized the Pamlico branch of the NAACP and singled out Vicky Mosley Jones for organizing Camp Learn a Lot and a recent "stuffed bus" supply drive that filled backpacks to be distributed at the primary school.
The superintendent introduced an "At a Glance" packet summarizing project funding and timelines for the new county 6–12 school that the district discussed jointly with county commissioners on July 30. "There's little literally something happening weekly now," Dr. Johnson said, and asked Mr. Rice to give a construction update.
Construction update: Mr. Rice told the board that 20 of 41 bid packages had opened and 21 packages lacked the required three bids and will be rebid. "Of the 20 bid packages that were open right now... we're about $2,000,000 under budget," Mr. Rice said, and invited board members to attend the upcoming bid opening on Thursday at 2 p.m. He added that site work, including tree removal behind Fred Anderson, will begin within the next week or two.
Dr. Johnson announced a tentative groundbreaking for the new school on Saturday, Sept. 21, around 10 a.m., and said the district will share final details when they are available. The superintendent also noted operational changes for staff: the district is moving to an online pay-stub and personnel-record access system, and a detailed budget book (PDF) will be posted online to explain funding sources and allocations.
The meeting closed the superintendent’s report with schedule reminders: teachers return Aug. 19 for in-service, a welcome-back assembly will be at 9 a.m. that day, school open-house times for each campus were listed in the packet, and the board was informed of the School Board Association conference in November.
Next steps: The district will rebid packages that did not receive three bids, finalize the full budget estimate after the remaining openings, and proceed toward the tentative Sept. 21 groundbreaking.
