Resident asks whether Olivette would consider data centers; raises industrial noise concerns

During the public‑comment portion of the meeting, Wilhelmina Shackleford asked whether the city is considering any data‑center developments and whether the council would support residents affected by around‑the‑clock plant operations that generate noise and pollution.

"Is Olivette considering any type of data center in this area?" Shackleford asked, adding that several subdivisions are affected by persistent noise, light and air concerns from a nearby plant and asking whether the council would support constituent efforts to limit hours of operation.

City staff responded that the city has received no petitions for a data‑center use. "The city is not [considering one]," staff said, adding that the agenda item under discussion involved zoning regulations that would be available should an applicant propose such a use. Staff said any petition would be subject to staff and planning review and ultimately the council's consideration, and that the city would inform the public if a petition were received.

Shackleford said she and others feel they have not had sufficient support from St. Louis County and asked whether the city would help residents; the council took the question under advisement and said staff would follow up offline through the city manager.

Separately, a former city manager, Barb Sandeick, called in during public comment to offer a tribute to outgoing council member Maxine Wild and praised her years of service; council members responded with thanks and remarks.
