Board hears college-advising gains, CTE progress and new-school construction update

Pamlico County Schools staff used the May board meeting to highlight improvements in post-secondary advising and career-readiness programs and to update the board on construction of a new school building.
Rachel Wayne, the high school's college/post-secondary adviser, told the board that family engagement has increased about 41% over two years and that nearly 70% of the class of 2025 are enrolling in community college or a four-year university when military enlistment and short-term training are included. Wayne said applications to three or more schools rose 186% and highlighted multiple scholarship and program successes, including Park Scholar and other university honors.
"Our students have worked really hard," Wayne said, noting stronger financial-aid packages and partnerships with institutions including NC State and East Carolina University. Wayne identified several college and transfer pathways and thanked counselors and staff; she also noted her position is grant funded and that this is her final year in the program.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) coordinator Mr. Carawan (S2) reported a roughly 60% credential attainment rate in the fall semester and new industry partnerships, and said eight students are participating in work-study this year, up from zero the prior year.
Facilities updates: Henry Rice (S6) provided a detailed construction status report for the new school. Rice said construction began Nov. 7; the concrete slab is finishing, hollow-core floor planks are scheduled to begin June 9 with completion in a few weeks thereafter, asbestos abatement in the existing building is planned when school is out, and a new sewer lift station location was identified. Rice said the project remains on track for May 2026 completion and that demolition and parking-lot work will follow so the school can open for the 2026–27 year.
The board acknowledged the reports and approved a motion to record awareness and approval where required. No formal votes were recorded on program content beyond the board's approval by voice for routine acknowledgment items.
