Superintendent praises staff for flood sheltering; board moves into closed session on litigation

Superintendent Smith used his July 14 report to thank Hoyt administration staff, custodial staff, bilingual family liaisons, community school coordinators and success workers for partnering with the Red Cross and Polk County Emergency Management to operate a school as a shelter for families displaced by recent flooding.

"That's been a tremendous partnership, and we are incredibly honored to be able to serve as a shelter for families," Smith said, thanking staff for their collaboration and care.

Later in the meeting the board moved to enter a closed session to discuss litigation strategy. Board member Howell moved that the board go into closed session under Iowa Code section 21.5(1)(c) "to discuss strategy with counsel in matters that are presently in litigation or where litigation is imminent, where its disclosure would be likely to prejudice or disadvantage the position of the governmental body in that litigation." Alonso seconded; Miss Rios conducted the roll call and the motion passed 6-0. The board recessed to a separate room for the closed session and reminded the public there would be no access during that time.
