Benson approves special-use permit for Bad Beard Ink tattoo shop in downtown block

The Town of Benson Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Sept. 10 to grant SUP-2024-02, allowing Bad Beard Ink to operate a tattoo shop in an end-unit of a building on South Wall Street.
Paul Embler, interim planning director, told the board staff and the Planning Board recommended approval; the Planning Board had voted 8-0 to recommend the special-use permit. Applicants Brandon Williams and Travis Beard described the business, said Beard will perform tattoos, and said they plan to limit operations to appointments to reduce walk-in traffic and to meet all health- and building-code requirements.
Brandon Williams asked the board to consider the business as more than a license, saying, "it is his dream. It’s his passion, it’s what his release is, it’s what has guided him to the direction that he’s headed now in life." Williams also noted that a tattoo parlor in Benson could capture local business and that the applicants plan community sponsorships and events.
Travis Beard confirmed the planned location is the former Glenda’s Hot Dogs building and said the shop will follow the health department inspections and town requirements. Embler told the board the request is allowable by special-use permit in the Neighborhood Business (B-2) district and staff recommended approval with the condition that work meet the Town of Benson Unified Development Ordinance and North Carolina building codes.
Commissioner McLamb moved that all four findings of fact had been met; the board granted the permit by a 4-0 vote.
The approval allows the applicants to pursue required town inspections and building permits and to open once those requirements are satisfied.
