Public Service Commission renews WGL Energy Services' retail licenses after complaints close

The Public Service Commission on July 15 voted 4‑0 to renew WGL Energy Services Inc.'s natural gas and electricity retail supplier licenses after staff and the Office of People's Counsel reported that consumer‑affairs complaints against the company had been resolved.

Charles Herbert, speaking for commission staff, said WGL's renewal applications required administrative review because the company had open Consumer Affairs Division (CAD) complaints at the time of filing. Staff told the commission the number of open complaints had fallen and that the company continued to work with CAD to close remaining items.

Portia O'Drofo of the Office of People's Counsel told the commission that, after meeting with staff and WGL, OPC filed updated comments recommending approval and offered that, if complaints remained, the commission could require a 90‑day status report. "We realized that WGL Energy Services has been responsive in addressing the matters," O'Drofo said.

Stephanie Bolton of the Consumer Affairs Division announced that the last outstanding complaint was closed that morning. "The very last of the WGL complaints was closed this morning," Bolton said.

A WGL representative, who identified himself as Bridal Jamal, associate general counsel, thanked staff and the parties for their work. The commission then voted to renew the company's licenses (item 6 and item 7), with four ayes and no recorded no or abstain votes.

The orders reflect the commission's usual condition that the licensee remain subject to CAD oversight and to close out any future complaints filed against it.
