Southeast Island School District approves policy updates, moves several policies to second reading and okays consent agenda

The Southeast Island School District Board of Education on Oct. 30 approved updates to a package of board policies and bylaws and approved its consent agenda, which included the Sept. 23 meeting minutes, the October 2024 financial report and multiple FY2025 employment and extracurricular contracts.
A motion to approve updates to the listed policies (BP 1250, BP 5121, BP 5123, BP 5125.3, BP 5131.1, BP 5131.5, BP 5131.6, BP 5141.3, BP 5141.31, BP 5141.51, BP 6146.5, BP 6161.2, BB 9320, and BB 9322) was recorded with a board vote of Yea: 3; Nay: 0; Abstain: 2 and was resolved as passed in the meeting minutes.
On a separate motion the board considered second readings for BP 0500, BP 0510, BP 0520 and BP 0530 (Discontinuation or Closure of Schools). Board Member Molly Kimzey moved an amendment to remove BP 0530 from that group; the amendment passed unanimously (Student Representative Vote: Yea: 1; Nay: 0; Board Vote: Yea: 5; Nay: 0). The amended motion to move BP 0500, BP 0510 and BP 0520 to second reading then passed (Student Representative Vote: Yea: 1; Board Vote: Yea: 3; Nay: 0; Abstain: 2).
The consent agenda approved a range of personnel motions: an FY2025 administrator contract addendum for Astrid Richard-Cook; FY2025 extracurricular contracts for Jennifer Andis, Mel Cook and Maria Lineker; an FY2025 extra duty contract for Amanda Blankenship; FY2025 classified employment for Joshua Hayes and Jack Nicholson; and FY2025 classified employment pending required documentation for Casey Bunker and Derek Shell. That consent motion passed with a recorded vote of Yea: 5; Nay: 0.
The board also appointed Debbie Fehr as the legislative liaison and Tony Lovell as the youth advocate liaison by recorded motions that passed unanimously. The meeting minutes show vote tallies for these appointments as Yea: 5; Nay: 0.
No formal votes on school closures were taken; the amendment removed BP 0530 from the second-reading motion. The board set its next regular meeting for Nov. 20, 2024.
