Southeast Island School District superintendent and schools report on fall programs, grants and student trip

Superintendent Rod Morrison opened the Sept. 23 Southeast Island School District board meeting in Thorne Bay with an overview of district goals, engagement activities, planning and staff recognition, and then invited department and school leaders to summarize recent highlights.
Port Alexander Lead Teacher Patrick Trischman described ATTSAA courses and visiting experts; students participating in that program introduced themselves and shared what they had learned. Area Principal and Dean of Students Shaine Nixon reported on recent conferences, student activities, course offerings and successes.
AK‑TRAILS Coordinator and Naukati Lead Teacher Cassandra Christopherson outlined student lesson plans and courses, testing, staffing matters, the planned college trip and the upcoming Naukati Open House. Student Representative Tia Christopherson delivered a student report that included activities and details about the post‑secondary trip.
Contracted Business Manager Lucienne Smith provided a summary of the FY2024 audit, the district's COVID‑relief funds and financial statements, the Thorne Bay Café enterprise fund, accounts receivable and capital improvement projects. Superintendent Morrison also noted a king salmon donation to the child nutrition program and highlighted efforts by the special services department.
State & Federal Programs/Grants Coordinator Astrid Richard‑Cook summarized current grant awards and applications, ESEA Title grant monitoring and audit efforts, and the Indian Education grant renewal and reporting process.
These updates were presented as informational reports; no formal motions or policy changes were recorded in these presentations. The board’s next regular meeting is set for Oct. 30, 2024 at Naukati School.
