Benson Board approves $70,300 transformer purchase and $244,075 pickleball courts; two officers sworn in

The Town of Benson Board of Commissioners approved routine procurement actions and welcomed two newly sworn officers during its Feb. 11 work session.
Assistant Town Manager Calla Godwin presented a purchase order for transformers to serve the Benson Village subdivision, naming Southeastern Transformer as the vendor and stating the cost as $70,300. Commissioner William Neighbors moved to approve the purchase order; the motion carried on a 6‑0 vote.
Parks & Recreation Director Matt Smith said staff recommended awarding the pickleball courts construction to Smithson, Inc. for $244,075. Smith told the Board Dr. Vyas has donated funds to pay for the installation. Commissioner Maxine Holley moved to approve the bid; the Board voted 6‑0 to award the contract.
Earlier in the meeting Town Clerk Angie Thornton swore in Officer Yehuda Feinstein and Officer Olivia White. Officer Feinstein said he was "extremely happy to be in Benson" and called it an "honor and a privilege" to join the department. The Board adjourned at 8:39 p.m. after a motion by Commissioner Maxine Holley passed 6‑0.
The Board also set a retreat date for March 15, 2025; no additional procurement actions or budget approvals were taken at the work session.
