Benson approves 10% police pay increase, adds two patrol sergeant positions

The Benson Board of Commissioners on Oct. 24 approved a police salary proposal that increases current employees' pay and hiring rates by 10% and creates two patrol sergeant positions.
Assistant Town Manager Calla Godwin presented the proposal, which also includes a progression plan and a certification incentive program. Godwin said adding two sergeant positions would allow the department to staff four squads.
"The new proposal is a 10% increase across the board for current employees, as well as the hiring rate for new positions, and the implementation of two new patrol sergeants," Godwin said.
Commissioner William Neighbors moved to approve the proposal; the motion passed 6-0. The board did not provide specific dollar amounts for the overall budget impact at the meeting; staff will incorporate the change into payroll and budget documents.
