Benson code officer reports 187 cases since Sept.; 115 abated

Marc Martinez, the Town of Benson’s Code Enforcement Officer, told the Board of Commissioners at its Jan. 14 work session that between Sept. 16 and Dec. 31 his office logged 187 cases and has abated 115 of them. He said he focused first on five priorities: junk, abandoned vehicles, trash cans, bulk waste, public nuisances, and storage pods and containers, and that those priorities have been addressed.
The report drew immediate praise from commissioners and staff. Commissioner Maxine Holley said Martinez is “making a difference,” and Mayor Dr. R. Max Raynor and Town Manager Kimberly Pickett each commended his work and the way he represents the town.
The update provided a snapshot of enforcement activity in the first months after Martinez began the role in September 2024 and signals staff will continue enforcement on the backlog while responding to current complaints. The Board did not direct new policy changes during the update.
