At its April 22 meeting, the Historic District Commission of Temple NH approved planting an American Liberty Elm on the Town Hall green to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary. Gail Cromwell, speaking as a member of the Temple Village Green Committee, said the sapling was purchased from the Liberty Tree Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and proposed several planting sites within the Temple Historic District.
After viewing the grassy area in front of Town Hall — near the flagpole and a monument — Clay Lennartz moved that the commission approve planting the sapling to the left of the monument when facing the Town Hall. Chair Lilliane Lebel seconded the motion, which the commission approved unanimously. Lori Sherburne will notify Cromwell; the Village Green Committee will plant the tree.
The action was procedural and limited to approving the planting location and notifying the applicant; no funding appropriation or change to the Historic District ordinance was made. The Liberty Tree Society purchase and the commemoration purpose were noted by Cromwell during her presentation.
