Board accepts major equipment donation, reports closed-session update on bargaining

The board voted unanimously to accept an in-kind donation of woodworking equipment from community member Bob Ortiz intended for Kent County High School's woodworking and makerspace programs.
"He is donating a huge amount of his equipment to Kent County High School," Dr. McComas said, describing Ortiz's long history of support for the district and plans to bring him before the board for recognition in April. A board member estimated the donation's equipment value at about $55,000.
The board also moved into and later reported out of a closed session concerning collective-bargaining negotiations. Chair (speaker 1) said the closed session covered one item: an update to the board on negotiations. Attendees in closed session included board members and central-office staff (mister Hushin, mister Kirby, identified as director of finance; Dr. McComas; and miss Manley, identified as executive assistant). The chair said no action was taken in closed session.
Procedural votes at the meeting included approval of the agenda and, at the end of the evening, a motion to adjourn. The superintendent said the board would resume the budget process with a presentation in April that attaches dollar amounts to the staffing and program requests discussed.
The board set its next meeting for April 13, 2026, with an open session beginning at 5:30 p.m.; the superintendent said he will follow up with detailed slides on the middle-school funding picture in that meeting.
