Board moves to begin internal search, draft timeline for district administrator
Summary
The Northland Pines School Board agreed May 19 to post the district administrator position internally first, ask staff and parents for concise input, and have administration draft a hiring timeline for committee review in June, with further interviews or external searches still possible if needed.

The Northland Pines School Board on Monday opened a formal process to fill its district administrator role and agreed to begin with an internal posting and a short, staff-focused input step.
At the meeting the board discussed whether to run an internal search or to hire a firm for an external search. Administration recommended gathering targeted input on candidate qualifications before advancing. One board member favoring promotion from within said, “I’m always a huge advocate from promoting from within,” and other members stressed the need to balance timeliness, fairness and legal constraints around interview questions and candidate interactions.
Administrators told the board a simple internal posting would allow interested, licensed employees to indicate their intent; staff and parent feedback would be solicited with a brief set of questions and presented to board committees in June. The board asked administration to draft a timeline and options (including staff-input methods and sample interview procedures) for committee review.
Board members emphasized the importance of a rigorous process even for internal candidates. The district administrator noted the board could pivot to an external search if the internal process did not produce a satisfactory finalist.
The board did not select a candidate at the meeting. Next steps set by the board: post the position internally, administration to draft and circulate a timeline and short staff/parent input questions, committee-level discussion in June, and follow-up at the June board meeting to determine whether to proceed internally or expand the search externally.
