Metuchen wins $1.62 million library construction award; council OKs first reading of library bond ordinance

Metuchen officials announced that the borough was awarded $1,622,990 in reallocated Library Construction Bond Act funds and moved to match that award with local funds, advancing a bond ordinance for the library renovation.
The grant was presented at the July 13 Metuchen Borough Council meeting; Mayor Bush said the reallocated funds will support expansion and substantial first-floor improvements to the Metuchen Public Library to improve accessibility, technology and community space. “It’s very hard to to say no to that kind of money when you have a chance,” he said.
Why it matters: the award will fund renovations that the borough and library trustees say will modernize the library’s first-floor space and increase accessibility and programming. Council members said the funds build on prior local planning and fundraising efforts and will require the borough to commit a matching amount as part of the Library Construction Bond Act rules.
Council member Jethwani, who serves as the council liaison to the library board, described the award as “really exciting news for the library” and praised library leadership, including Director Rebecca Franco Martin, for helping craft plans tied to the strategic planning process completed in 2025.
At the meeting the council introduced Ordinance 2026-13, a bond ordinance intended to appropriate and authorize borrowing for the expansion and renovation of the Metuchen Public Library; the ordinance passed on first reading and the council set a public hearing for Aug. 17, 2026. The mayor and members said additional project steps include finalizing design, going out to bid, and coordinating with the library board and fundraising partners.
At the July 13 meeting Mayor Bush and council members noted prior incremental local support for library improvements and thanked volunteers and Friends of the Metuchen Library for fundraising efforts. The council did not adopt final borrowing or appropriation figures beyond introducing the bond ordinance on first reading; the public hearing on Aug. 17 will include an opportunity for public comment and final action.
Next steps: the council will hold a public hearing on Ordinance 2026-13 on Aug. 17, 2026, at which residents may comment before the council considers final adoption.
