General Manager John Viola reported to the Ocean Pines Board on personnel, financial metrics and public‑works operations during the June meeting.
On police staffing, Viola said the Ocean Pines Police Department remains short‑staffed and that current pay scales are being adjusted within the existing budget to improve recruiting and retention. He cited current pre‑academy/certified pay roughly near $63,568 and said staff is recommending increases to about $72,000 for pre‑academy hires and about $73,500 for certified officers; several officers are covering extra duties while recruits attend the academy in July and possibly again in January.
Why it matters: Public‑safety staffing affects response capacity and patrol coverage; proposed pay increases will be considered within budget constraints.
Viola also reviewed maintenance and public‑works items: a new bocce leaderboard was fabricated and sponsorship signage is being finalized; landscaping and shrub replacement are being scheduled for the fall; trail clearing is planned after the July 4 holiday with outside contractors to help with heavy work; and recent storm cleanup mulch has been hauled away.
Linda (S9) said the Public Works Yard will remain closed for the remainder of the summer to remove stockpiled soil, dredge material and chip debris and to dismantle an old floating dock; reopening is planned for the fall. She emphasized that Public Works will offer curbside pickup of paper bags (no limit) for residents who call the department.
On finances, Treasurer Monica Korkowski reported the association had approximately $7.9 million in cash as of May 31, a year‑over‑year decrease of about $700,000; the association also held about $10.6 million in CDARS and $7.3 million in insured cash sweep and operating accounts, and realized roughly $56,000 in interest income for the month.
Chair (S3) and board members framed the staffing and financial updates as items staff will monitor; staff will return with more detailed budget and recruiting information as needed.
What’s next: GM staff will continue recruitment and academy scheduling, monitor fiscal performance after the July 4 season, and coordinate public‑works reopening logistics in the fall.
