Bonham approves solid-waste rate increase tied to contractor price hike; penalty language corrected

During a public hearing on June 8, the Bonham City Council approved an amendment to Ordinance 1467 to update the fee schedule for solid waste collection services within the city and at Lake Bonham.
Sarah Osburn, director of administrative services, said the city’s contractor, Sanitation Solutions, notified staff of an annual price increase effective June 1; the overall increase this year is 10.62%. The ordinance update raises residential rates by $1.69, from $25.65 to $27.34 for one polycart. Osburn said this is the final year of the current contract and that staff has convened a rate-study group and plans to issue a request for proposals to obtain new quotes from multiple providers.
City Attorney Courtney Morris pointed out a drafting error in the ordinance: the penalty provision in the version presented listed $200 but should be $2,000. Council corrected the penalty language and approved the ordinance (motion by Sam Fox, seconded by Kevin Hayes; vote 7-0).
What to expect: customers will see the adjusted rate on billing following administrative implementation; staff will move forward with RFP planning ahead of contract expiration.
