Mount Kisco recreation commission reviews camp enrollment, pool permits and staffing ahead of summer season

Superintendent Kyle Thornton told the Mount Kisco Recreation Commission on April 8 that Early Bird camp enrollment is averaging about 119 campers per week and that the department is roughly $5,000 ahead of this time last year. He said Early Bird registration has ended and regular and nonresident rates are now being accepted.
Thornton said he had requested a separate camp line in the Village’s fiscal-year budget to isolate camp expenses and staff costs, but "he was told that this cannot be done." To improve camp communications he purchased an iPad for the camp director and assistant director so they can send updates and emails to families.
Thornton reported pool-permit sales are low and noted that many permit purchases have been tied to camp registration because campers must have pool membership. The pools remain winterized while the department completes a required final health-permit inspection; Thornton said he is working with the department engineer to resolve outstanding items. "The pools are still winterized," he said, and the inspection must be completed before the department can finalize 2026 pool permits.
Assistant Superintendent Kathy Laoutaris told commissioners that the pool director who had previously worked for Mount Kisco has decided not to return this year and that she is already in contact with at least one potential replacement. Commissioners agreed to continue recruitment and to monitor permit sales and staffing as the inspection is completed.
Chair Christine Dennett suggested sending a resident survey to better align program offerings with community demand; Laoutaris said the department would pursue the idea. The commission also noted that some preschool soccer offerings were canceled and that the 4- and 5-year-old Sunday soccer program is the only youth soccer session currently running.
The commission did not take a binding vote on budget reclassification at the meeting; routine procedural motions (minutes acceptance, work-hour changes and adjournment) were recorded in the minutes.
