The New London School District board heard May 7 that Lincoln Elementary was awarded a Wisconsin Early Literacy Coaching grant that will provide a half‑time literacy coach for the next two years at no cost to the district.
Tamela (speaker identified at the meeting) told trustees she worked with Lincoln staff to compile data and submit a building‑level application; the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) funds the position and the grant must be referenced in reporting and communications. Tamela said the grant will bring professional development opportunities for the Lincoln building administrator and reading specialist and that district staff hope to scale useful coaching practices to other buildings over time.
“It's my goal that we take some of those practices and some of the coaching that we're doing there, and we are able to build our literacy program in other buildings also,” Tamela said during the meeting.
Administrators noted the grant applies to a single building (applications were by building, not district wide) and that district staff will follow DPI guidelines for reporting and program attribution as the coach carries out instructional work. Board members asked procedural questions and no board action was required beyond the grant recognition.
Staff said they will return with periodic updates consistent with DPI reporting requirements as the coaching work proceeds.
